Unfortunately solar systems are not priced like cars. You can’t look online and have an estimate of how much a solar system will cost you. The reason for this is that each individual system is custom designed for your electricity usage and your home or business. People don’t use electricity the same, so even if you and your neighbor have the exact same house, they could easily use twice as much electricity as you. Yes, there is a 30% tax credit off of the net cost of the system. You may live in an area that has a rebate. Utility rebates are becoming a thing of the past, but if your Retail Electric Provider or utility company offer rebates, and you are eligible to receive a rebate, TAC will help you with the rebate process.

As most systems are installed on the client’s roof, most systems are limited to how the building was built for placement of the system. For the most production out of your system it needs to face South, but West and East also provide adequate production. We do not want to place systems on the North facing roofs. If you are installing a ground mount, usually your options are limitless.

Shading is a killer to solar systems as it can greatly reduce the production of the system. TAC will help you design a system that works around any shading problems that you may have.

Unfortunately, most solar systems are not set up to provide electricity for when the grid goes down. For this to happen, your system would need batteries to provide backup to particular critical loads that you would like to backup, e.g. refrigerator, some lights, and maybe some outlets. This is a product that TAC Solar offers, just keep in mind that it does add a fair amount of cost to the project price.

Luckily, most insurance companies will not raise your rates for installing a solar system. They treat it like roofing material, just make sure to let them know that you have installed them. Also, if you ever need to have your roof replaced, the insurance company will pay TAC to come out and take your system down and re-install after the roofer is done.

Solar modules are rated through the UL rating system, and for them to pass the glass on the panel must be able to withstand 1 inch hail traveling at 54 mph at a 90 degree impact. It will take an extreme hail storm to break your panels, if that does happen, your insurance company will cover them.

Very rarely do we run into structures that will not hold solar systems. The average weight of a solar system is 3 lbs per square foot dead load. Thus, most roof structures can withstand much more than that.

While we will drill some holes in your roof, you should have complete peace of mind that your solar system will not cause roof leaks. We flash the connection points on your roof in line with and underneath the shingles, therefore gravity prevents water from entering your roof. Some roof applications actually don’t require penetrations of the roof, e.g. flat roofs, standing seam metal, clay tile.

Residential systems are fairly quick. Upon signing of the contract and collection of the deposit, TAC will begin the design and permitting process. The design will be completed pretty quickly, but depending upon your city and/or HOA, the permitting process can take a while. Usually we can get an install done within 2-4 weeks, it really depends on the pace of the AHJ and the HOA.

Commercial systems take much more time depending upon the size of the system and how restrictive the AHJ can be. More detail is needed in the commercial systems for permitting than a residential system. Average time on commercial systems is 2-4 months varying with the size of system.
